John Morin stories

John Morin is a former Lansing resident who now lives in Holt.

Break in

February fourth , 2012 was a bright sunny winter day. I was at work, Sheri was at home.  The neighborhood was under attack. Numerous break-ins had occurred. Primarily, televisions were being stolen. Seeing the homeless and prostitutes throughout the neighborhood, I was able to explain to Sheri, in many ways they are victims also, whether mental issues, financial losses, drugs, unable to overcome their situations. It was with this knowledge that she started to help others less fortunate.

On this day, Sheri left the house to give a girl a ride. When some of the things the girl said sounded suspicious, she quickly returned home to discover that the front door had been kicked in and the big screen TV was gone. Sheri contacted the police, suspecting that Jennifer Scott had set her up.  She felt Jennifer had coordinated by phone with the people breaking in while giving her a ride. Sheri then called me and I came home to deal with the immediate damage.  The police were there, dusting for prints and asking questions.  A Green Cab driver had been parked at the car wash and had observed the entire event. He did not think it was strange for a person to leave their house, then others show up and kick in the front door, and exit with a TV they carried down the street. My frustration was loose. So many others had been broken into and the LPD could not catch anyone.  There had been a murder just down the street from us, and that too went unsolved.  Were the LPD officers capable of catching anyone? So I asked the officers about this failure, and I suggested maybe since no officers that work for LPD live in the city of Lansing, maybe that had caused a disconnect in the serve and protect part of their job.

An officer spoke up about how a prostitute ran to our house and Sheri sheltered her from him.  My response was, if there is a crime being committed at my house, I give permission for the police to enter and resolve the issue.  If Sheri has also done anything, then she also should be held liable. I was not looking to argue or battle the LPD.  But at this time we had heard much about how the LPD treated prostitutes. Myself, I would ask them to hang out in front of the mayor and chief of police homes, that we are all poor taxpayers. Prosecutor Dunnings hadn't shown up in the neighborhood as yet, or I would have sent them to him.  But the police were as bad if not worse than Dunnings.  Heard a few times where prostitutes were driven out of town and left on the side of the road, told not to come back to Lansing.  I figured that this was how cops ended their dating relationships, or they were upset because they caught a venereal disease.  As I tell everyone, they have diseases and do not consider anything when giving it to anyone. In 2015 I requested a copy of the police report. It had been closed pending further leads.

Stuart Dunnings III released from Clinton County Jail

I had read an article one day about a group of South-side residents complaining about the city hiring the Chief of Police who did not live in the city. Virg Bernero was the mayor and his response was that it would be illegal for him to respond to that criticism.  We went through a number of Chiefs of Police over this period.  Speaking with former LPD officers, they stated that none of them could control the officers; the union made it impossible to hold them accountable.  If you look at many of the mailers that local politicians send out, often they state that they support and are supported by the local police and union. Not very often do they display their support for the citizens who live in Lansing. Isn't that right Carol Wood?  But we will discuss her failings later.  It's time to talk about shootings, and when I discovered that my life was worth nothing in the eyes of the LPD.
