Retirement Age for Lansing Police and Fire Retirees
December 12, 2011

Lansing City Employee Compensation

Retirement age is missing from the pension information for most Police and Fire retirees because it does not appear on the pension calculation sheet. Unlike the Employees Retirement System (ERS), retirement age is not a factor in calculating the pension. Birth date does appear on the sheet, and that is how I calculated retirement age for a few retirees. However, the City redacted birthdates for most retirees, explaining that it was personal and did not contribute significantly to the public understanding of government.

There is, however, another source of retirement ages: the minutes of the Board of Trustees of the Police and Fire Retirement System. The Board meets monthly and any new retirements are announced at those meetings. For each retiree, the minutes include the retirement effective date, retirement age, total service and purchased service. Age is given in years only - not years and months.
